Smoking Ban 2007I just read on Wikipedia the following:

How does everyone feel about this new smoking ban being put in place? Will it affect you personally, and do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing ultimately?
My opinion:
I think it's a good thing as it's better for the health of non-smokers having less pollution around, but I think a lot of people will disobey the rule as they're not used to refraining from smoking in public places.

But then the people they smoke around don't exactly have the opportunity to stop inhaling the poisonous fumes eh?

I am totally for this smoking ban :P When I tried to quit The most Word Banned annoying thing was people smoking next toi me and INSTANTLY I wanted to smoke again.
Smoking is not cool anymore, its goin out of fashion. People just wana drag eveyone else into their :) adciction. so they push their "mates" into smoking. I HATE IT
Its so good not having to waste my last £2.50 on smoking now even when I am drinking I dont smoke but when Im around sum1 who is smoking its horrible you get that bad stomavch feelin again that you "NEED" a fag  :

Smoking is both cool and clever, It gives you such a good image and brings you closer to your friends, It only costs £2 a packet so... kids, go out and buy some today! 
Join us in our chilled out world, you can sit in the living room, outside on apark bench wherever you like, and smoke the sweet lambert & butler :thumbup: or any other one of the adamantly cool named brands ;)
before long you will be able to keep up with us cool geezers who can smoke 20 a day, wow, your a superstar 8)

but you breath in more toxic fumes from cars, does that mean the goverment should ban them in public places.... why havent they made it so there is stil some pubs, restraunts, etc that smokers can use, then non smokers would have a choice, but so would smokers.
put quite simply, its the biggest pile of crap of a law thats ever been introduced, if what they say about second hand smoking is true, how come any adults are still alive, seriously, why arnt they all dead from the dreaded second hand smoke, hell more people die from the legal drug-alcohol than they do from second hand or first hand smoking, is that the next thing to get banned???

mate thats just the start.... and all because they cant stop people buying duty-free, the goverment wasnt bothered about your heatlh when they was raking in everyones taxe's from the MOST expensive country for cigs in the world, but now everyones buying duty free they have turned there backs on the smoker, they say its fairer, but to me its not for it to be fair there should be designated smoking cafes, pubs etc. - still theres nowt you can do, either follow the rule or get hit with- yes you guessed it, a nice fat hefty fine!!!!

Yeah I agree it's probably all about the government raking in more money for themselves, and it's secretly not to help the environment or the health of the nation. I think if you get seen littering in the street by an authorised person you can be fined for that too...it's about getting money off people, not actually helping the environment. I mean, if there's a problem with littering maybe we need more bins instead of fining people?! Same with the smoking ban - maybe we need more designated smoking pubs/bars (I disagree with restaurants though, I think all restaurants should be non-smoking).
At the end of the day people are (usually) spending their own money on cigarettes so they should be allowed to smoke them wherever they wish. Just like people who buy chocolate bars are allowed to eat them wherever they wish! It's just in some places it's more polite not to do so - for example if you go into a shop it's polite to stop eating and drinking, so if you go into some restaurants or a public place where there are i.e. children around then it's polite not to smoke.

There's alcohol ban areas where I live. Like around train stations and in certain areas of the centre of town.

Yeah it is kind of about having self control I guess, I think smokers should in theory be able to manage when the ban comes into place. Like as I said before when you go into a shop it's polite not to eat and drink whilst you're in the shop, and in restaurants it's polite not to use your mobile phone when at the table and things like that....if we can all manage to do stuff like that then I'm sure people who smoke are able to refrain from smoking in certain areas.

Oh for goodness sake, is it not banned in Scotland? Like I was in the hairdressers the other day and my hairdresser was smoking IN the room, and then when she was cutting my hair, she STUNK of smoke!
Babies die through passive smoking. How the hell can people smoke around them?! And of course plenty of others die through it too! And its not as simple as just moving out of the way, smoke drifts!

I'm not sure if Scotland is included in the ban coz it just said 'England' on Wikipedia and I know Northern Ireland started a ban a while back independantly didn't they?

Scotland had a ban similar YEARS ago, but people still smoke in public - so it doesnt really work!
And ok I know for some people it will be hard to stop smoking outside, but the only people I will only actually feel sorry for (to a certain extent) is those very old and very dear guys who fought in world war 2, as cigarettes wereactually part of their ration so they ALL smoked then, not necessarily through choice!

I don't think it should be hard for people to stop smoking out in public, because although smoking is an addiction we all manage as adults/responsible human beings to refrain from other things don't we!

Yeah, but cigarettes have some chemical in it which kind of encourages them to smoke, and they cant help it! (Dont worry Im not trying to defend them, its their own fault for starting to smoke! Im just looking at it from their point of view!) The only way they can stop is if they want to, and get help!
They need to look around them when they are outside. How many people are smoking? All those who are NOT smoking and the bigger people, they can control themselves!

I can't see how people can actually continue smoking knowing that its damaging them! although i know...I could just walk outside and get hit by a car or even a bus! Smoking is still a killer though :P
But....I won't give you all a lecture everyone to their own choices eh?....:lol:
My mum is actually happy with this ban thing, and she's a smoker :lol:

But it makes your fingers and teeth go yellow and your breath smell stinky lol, and the smoke gets into your clothes n your hair! And not only do you have to buy the cigarettes for £3 but you need to buy loads of packs of chewing gum and bodyspray to cover up the smell!

I totally agree with it! And also there was this british gas man that came round today to fix something, he was talking to my dad and they started talking about the ban, and he agreed with it too.

Yeh smoking doesn't cause all types of cancer, but it can contribute to certain types like lung/throat/mouth cancer. So we can't solely blame cancer on smoking lol. Smoking contributes to other diseases tho too like heart disease, but obesity can also cause that so again its not necessaily solely down to smoking.
Personally though I can't think of any positive things about smoking..

They were probably destined to overcome the cancer anyway and it was caught early enough so the treatment cured it. The smoking probably just put them a bit at ease about the situation, coz I understand that smoking calms people down and de-stresses you?

It doesnt actually prove anything, why are you putting other people's lives in danger that choose not to smoke. Theres lots of other things you can do to make your life not boring and you know it, its probably just because your being stubborn or feisty about it lol
