Life Sentence...A life sentence is not actually a life sentence, but is about 14 years (i think, correct me if Im wrong).
Do you think it should actuallu be LIFE?!
|
emmalouiseee

I think rapists and peodaphiles should get life (actual life sentances) or be shot....
|
Amy

No I dont. I think 14years is enough. Everybody deserves another chance, and they can learn how to be a better person in prison, and 14 years in plenty!

People who commit serious crimes should be locked up for life (meaning until they die), because it's for the benefit of the victim/s. As emmalouiseee said - if you are abused as a child or are the victim of rape then it ruins your life and to know that your abuser is walking around freely it would certainly not help you even begin to recover from what you've gone through.
I think life imprisonment should be applied to child abusers, rapists (the people who set out to rape someone, not the culprits of drunken misunderstandings), and murderers. I don't think people who commit manslauter should get life, but I think they should be put away for a good number of years.
|
Amy
|
But they wouldn't. 14 years in prison pretty much ruins your life anyway. As I said, second chances are allowed. I think if you have had a life sentence before, and you comitt a crime bad enough to get you life for the second time, THEN it should be until you die!

Erm 14 years is nothing...
I know people who are/have been in jail and they love it in there! They get drugs, make money, watch tv, go to the gym etc!
Rapists and peodafiles SHOULD be locked away for life! Amy if someone done it to YOU would you want them walking the streets even in 14 years when they will probibly do it again??

With child abusers though, they're never going to change because being sexually attracted to children is their sexuality. It's just like locking up a gay person in the hope they'll change into a straight person - it just won't happen because they're born with those sexual intentions. Child abusers will always be a risk to children.

Yeah. You say they are born with it in them.
Well in that case, it is not their fault - technically. They can not help it - as wrong as it is.
So they should not be jailed, but taken somewhere else maybe?

Mass murderers though, such as the likes of the Moors murderers, definately deserved to be put away until they died. Society needs to be protected from people like that. And anyway, if you kill more than once you've given yourself the chance to not do it again after the first murder.
I didn't say rapists were born with the intention to rape by the way emmalouiseee, I only said paedophiles were probably born with that intention in them just like gay people are born with gay intentions and straight people are born with straight intentions. That's my view of it anyway.

Yeah I agree - I personally don't believe the death sentence is ever right under any circumstances. Why punish someone with the same crime they committed? It just doesn't make sense.
Remember there's two types of killing someone - murder (deliberate) and manslauter (accidental) so each type of crime would obviously be treated in different ways. I think people who commit manslauter should perhaps get a second chance, but never murderers.
I do have sympathy though for victims of domestic abuse who eventually loose it and murder their abuser. I think they file that under 'diminished responsibility'.
|
emmalouiseee
|
Yes they should! and it doesnt depend as its as bad in all cases!
Ok... Your walking doen the street and some man grabs you pins you down and rapes you...
Would you just get up and think 'Oh well wonder whats for tea?' NO!
OR
Your only a child or even your own child, little bro or sis gets raped by some dirty old pedophile.. would you think 'Hmm poor man, oh well at least raping them might have cheered him up for a while' NO
IT WOULD RUIN YOUR LIFE!
WOULD YOU WANT THAT MAN OUT IN 14 YEARS TO DO IT AGAIN TO SOMEONE ELSE? :

a life sentance should mean life, or simply lose the expression life sentance as it is purley misleading :? :? :?

Ok who voted for no in the poll like me because I dont seem to have anybody here helping me back up my arguement! HELP!

People who commit crimes that are horrific enough to be punished with a 'life sentence' will have bizarre mental problems - I mean no one with a normal mindset would murder e.g. 5 girls in a row like the Suffolk case, or bomb the underground like July 7th etc etc. Because of this, they are therefore likely to react unpredictably when they're released from prison after doing their time. They might want to seek revenge on 1) their victim(s) family and 2) the jury that put them away for the 14 years or however long too. It's highly dangerous to let somebody out back into the public mainstream after they have committed a serious crime - they are likely to still have the mental problems they had when they committed their crime(s). As a compromise, people who commit serious/horrific crimes should spend a long period of time in jail, and then the rest of their lives in a high security mental institution or vice versa.

as soon as they serve this 14 years sentance there just going to come out of prison and do it again it should be life

Society needs to be protected from dangerous people. Your conscience gives you a chance to do the right thing before you carry out an action, and I think that's the only chance a person capable of committing the most serious crimes should be given.

I think 14 years is long enough, and people who have commited such crimes should be let out. If they've done it twice, then they should be kept inside for a long time.

I'm not sure about this one. A lot of people sentenced to life are released then re-offend. That wouldn't happen if life meant life. Others are released and never re-offend. I think that a life sentence should have the condition where if you re-offend then you are put back in jail for life, meaning life.
|
Qwerty

Im not sure on this one either, It really depends on the whole case.
Example: What if a 10 year old killed two other kids? What sentence would you give?
|

| us2 wrote: | | I think that a life sentence should have the condition where if you re-offend then you are put back in jail for life, meaning life. |
But why give them the opportunity to reoffend by letting them out? Why put the rest of society at risk in order to determine whether an individual should go back in prison or not... :?
| Qwerty wrote: | | Example: What if a 10 year old killed two other kids? What sentence would you give? |
There was quite a high profile case several years ago where two ten year old boys murdered a 2 year old boy called James Bulger who they'd kidnapped whilst in a supermarket. They tortured him then threw him on the railway track to die. The boys who did it are now adults but I can't quite remember what the outcome of the case was, I don't know whether they've done time in a youth offenders prison and been let out already or what... If anyone remembers please say.
There was also the Damilola Taylor case, again from several years ago, where a young boy (Damilola) was stabbed to death with a broken bottle by a group of teenagers. Only last October was a verdict reached - the youths responsible were sentenced to 8 years youth custody for his manslaughter.

That was the case i was referring to!
They were originally sentenced to detention at “Her Majesty's pleasure” and were not to be released for at least 20 years. After sentencing, the boys were housed in separate secret locations somewhere in the north of England and were expected to stay there until they turned eighteen when they would be transferred to an adult facility to serve out their time. However, when the European Court of Human Rights decreed in December 1999 that the boys had not received a fair trial and awarded costs and expenses of £15,000 to Robert and £29,000 to Jon. The boys are now teenagers, serving their sentences in their familiar secure units.
So they got paid, Justice or what?

Omg I never knew they got paid expenses because of a supposedly unfair trial :x That's disgusting, I don't see that as moral at all. Who cares if they didn't receive a 'fair' trial - what's most importantly not fair is that a little boy lost his life and a mother lost her son.

they should have parole and use it, untill they reoffend then they should take away the right to a parole hearing of anyone who commits the same offence twice, certain crimes like say murder/rape/child abusers should never get parole at all, and they should stop refering to the 15 years prison sentance as LIFE as it simply does not mean life i think. :? :? :?

I know this because many have been to my school to talk to this during our P.S.E lessons!
Ok maybe a bit longer that 14 years, I agree, but say you are 18? You could be in there for like 50 years! Also, you could actually have been faulsly accused but never actually found out innocent - this does happen.
And think of how full all the prisons would get if life actually was LIFE!

Well It Is A Rare Case That People Actually Do Get Life But I Think We Should Bring Back "Hanging" Or The "Electric Chair" Like In America.
And If You Have Life In Prison In America You Really Do Have Life In Prison No Exceptions.
America Lead By Example With Thier Strict Policies And Rules.

NO we can NOT bring back execution and Death Row etc.
People get faulsly accused all the time in this country and are jailed. When they are found to be innocent, they are just released and maybe get compensation.
Say they are faulsy accused, then killed, then found innocent? What is supposed to happen, bring them back to life? NO!

Yeah I agree with America's way of actually putting people in prison for LIFE. The punishment received fits the name like it should do. I totally disagree with the death sentence though - it just seems wrong in my head for someone to be punished with the same thing they committed (if they're a murderer, you're also kinda murdering them by giving them the death sentence). It's kinda hypocritical.
|

Thank you Flizzypop, the Death Sentence is just wrong!

I Mean People Who Have Commited Loads Of Murders E.G Ian Huntley,Harold Shipman.
This Country Is Terrible With Sentences And The Only Way To Crackdown With Some People To Think Twice Before Murdering Or Drug Dealing Is To Bring Back Death Penelties.
Anyway 99% Of People In Prisons Are Horrible People And I Dont Know Why You Are Sticking Up For Them So Much. :?

I still don't think the death sentence is the answer for mass murderers. Of course the likes of the Moors Murderers, Harold Shipman, the recent Suffolk murderer are all evil people....but I just don't think it's right for a country to be able to simply remove any person from society through the death penalty. I just see it as totally hypocritical, and it doesn't really set a good example for the public. I'm not a terribly religious person, but in the Bible one of the Ten Commandments is 'Thou Shalt Not Kill', so the law courts in a supposedly dominantly Christian society would be going against the word of God by giving out death sentences :? It doesn't make sense to me.

In short, that was what I was implying yeah.
I think the only time that killing people can be accepted is when trying to protect your country in a just war. By just war, I mean it must be a war where all the precepts of Just War are followed i.e. 'No civillians killed' etc. If you've done GCSE Religious Education you'll know what a Just War is probably... I still don't personally like the idea of any war however, but lets face it, world peace is never going to happen.

Although some people do change, I still think they should stay there for life (if they are a murderer or something). If they want to be free, then why did they commit the crime in the first place?
But if you got a life sentence in jail and it wasnt your own fault, then something should be done about it.
|
SwapitSam

Yeah I'm glad there is no electric chair or hanging or death sentences anymore, you cannot justify it by murdering a murderer, however bad it is.
Just have jail for life, and actually for life, not just 25 years. And yeah, you say some people change, but most don't. I mean, say someone murdered your sister, then they were let out after a few years because they thought they had changed, would you be happy? Especially if they went and did it again.
The good thing with life in prison, is while you are in there, the investigation can continue anyway. With things like DNA and that, its easier than before to solve crimes. However if you just killed them, then new evidence came along, they can't do anything.
|
Amy

They should be let out at the end of their sentence if thet HAVE changed, but they should be tagged and/or monitored!
If they have not changed their sentence should be renewed after a further trial!

Life = Life
20 Years = 20 Years
Etc
For Example You Should Serve Your Sentence And Judged On Your Behaviour In Prison You Should Be Let Out Or Serve More Years.
In Terms Of Life If You Have Commited A Murder Or Dealing Drugs Etc Yeah Life In Prison But Anything Else You Get Life For .Maybe You Should Serve 45 Years Then Judging On Your Behaviour Be Let Out Or Serve Life.
